EU to consider energy efficiency overhaul of buildings

The EU is considering proposals that could require the upgrade of 15 million buildings across the region by 2020 to reduce their energy use by a fifth, according to a report from Reuters.

The leaked report outlines draft proposals for a binding energy efficiency target for the region. Meeting the target would require a major energy efficiency makeover of buildings in the region, which could be supported by the European Investment Bank.

Builders and architects would be sent on low-energy building courses and property owners could be required to improve the performance of the least energy efficient buildings before selling them.
