Businesses should be acting on resource efficiency now, says report

Manufacturers need to act on improving resource efficiency to cope with the economic downturn and new legislation, urges a report from EEF, the Manufacturers’ Organisation in conjunction with Barclays Commercial Bank.
The report, Resource Efficiency; Business benefits from sustainable resource management, outlines the benefits and opportunities for companies that take on more efficient management of energy, water and other resources.

“The time to start acting on resource efficiency is now,” says Ray O’Donoghue of Barclays Commercial Bank.

Energy use and waste management need to be pushed higher up on the corporate agenda, he adds. Not only because it reduces costs, but also because it will help ensure compliance with existing and forthcoming legislation.

Manufacturers that take the lead on efficient resource management will also have an increased competitive advantage, says the report, by gaining access to new markets, more appeal among investors and a ‘greener’ image.
