Photovoltaics 'should earn 50p per KWh'

Microgeneration solar photovoltaic panels should earn 50p per kilowatt hour (KWh) for their owner when feed-in tariffs are introduced next year, according to the Renewable Energy Association

This rate was recommended for photovoltaic panels integrated into building in the REA's 'Blueprint' for tariffs.

Other photovoltaics should earn 42.5p per KWh, while wind turbines should sell surplus electricity to the grid at a rate of 11.5p per KWh.

If these measures are introduced, they could generate a massive increase in renewable energy, such as the growth seen in countries that have feed–in tariffs, such as Germany, which has 100 times more solar power than the UK and ten times more wind energy.

It also claimed that if the government followed its proposed tariff scheme, microgeneration could contribute ten per cent renewables to heat and power consumption.

Under government targets, the UK is to generate 35 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
