US energy companies FPL Group and Duke Energy have announced a ten-year commitment to switch their entire fleets to plug-in hybrid or all-electric cars and trucks by 2020.
The commitment, which was announced at the Clinton Global Initiative’s (CGI) fifth annual meeting in New York, could represent over 10,000 vehicles and around $600 million for the manufacturers that provide the vehicles.
As of January 1, 2010, the two companies will start switching over to plug-in hybrid or all-electric passenger vehicles and smaller trucks. But when it comes to larger trucks, FPL Group and Duke Energy say they will work with manufacturers to test prototype vehicles over the next could of years.
“A 10-year commitment gives us time to adopt, test and integrate new technology into fleets as a wider range of vehicles are developed,” explains Duke Energy president and CEO Jim Rogers.
