The London 2012 Olympic Games are meeting sustainability standards set at the time of the bid, according to the annual review by watchdog Commission for a Sustainable London 2012.

The report, Swimming Upstream – sustainable in challenging times?, says there has been solid achievement by the delivery bodies so far, although there are some concerns.

“The good news is that we have seen no evidence that the published sustainability standards are being watered down because of the recession,” says Commission chair Shaun McCarthy. “Indeed, new standards have been set in many areas.”

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has targets of an overall reduction in carbon of 50% compared with business-as-usual. During the demolition stage, there has been some really good work, says McCarthy, such as diverting 97% of waste from landfill.
