CBI calls on UK Government to kickstart low carbon economy

In an unprecedented move, the UK business organisation the CBI has set out its vision for a low-carbon economy for the country and is urging the Government to kickstart activities.

The CBI has set out four roadmaps covering the transport, building, energy generation and industrial sectors, as well as a ten-point action plan.

The action plan, which the CBI says the Government must undertake urgently to move to a low-carbon economy and ensure that the country realises its climate change targets, includes:

  • Adoption of low rolling resistance tyres and ‘smart’ dashboards to encourage fuel efficient driving;
  • Installation of smart meters in homes and businesses;
  • Recruitment and training of nuclear engineers to staff a new generation of power stations;
  • Giving the Severn Barrage scheme the go ahead;
  • Rewarding consumers for buying the most energy efficient appliances;
  • A programme to insulate homes; and
  • Supporting an additional carbon capture and storage demonstration project.
