Smart Grid initiative launched in Miami

Miami mayor Manny Diaz has announced an energy initiative to use federal economic stimulus funds to help spur a $200 million investment in smart grid technology and renewable energy over the next two years.

Known as Energy Smart Miami, the initiative aims to give consumers in the Miami-Dade County area, Florida, more information about their energy consumption and how to save electricity, as well as to generate more ‘green collar’ jobs.

The city of Miami claims the new initiative has the potential to be the most extensive smart grid implementation in the US. The backbone of Energy Smart Miami will be the deployment of more than one million advanced wireless smart meters to every home and most businesses in Miami-Dade County.

“The Energy Smart Miami Initiative is an investment in the future of our city, our residents and our neighbourhoods, and is an important step toward creating the green jobs of the future and building a clean energy economy,” says Mayor Diaz.
